Gardener (Ornamental)
Overview
A prestigious private estate on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border near Andover, is seeking a dedicated, skilled, and detail-oriented Gardener to join its Ornamental Garden Team.
This role is ideal for a passionate horticulturist with a strong work ethic who takes pride in maintaining and enhancing beautiful landscapes. Under the guidance of the Team Leader and reporting to the Head Gardener, the Gardener will contribute to the upkeep of various estate areas, including the Gardens Arrival, Main House and Courtyard Gardens, South and West Lawn, Visitor and Staff Parking, and other key locations.
The role requires attention to detail, teamwork, and a commitment to maintaining the estate’s high standards. Occasionally, the Gardener may be required to perform additional tasks as requested by the Estate’s Management Team.
Job duties
Responsibilities of the Ornamental Gardener on a Private Estate near Andover, include:
Garden Care & Maintenance:
- Perform regular watering, weeding, pruning, and fertilising of plants
- Assist the Team Leader in planning and executing garden maintenance tasks
- Monitor and control pests and diseases.Maintain garden tools and equipment in good working condition
- Plant, cultivate, and maintain flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plants
- Assist in landscaping projects as required
Attention to Detail:
- Regularly inspect all areas to ensure they are tidy and weed-free
- Maintain high-traffic areas in pristine condition
- Respect the privacy of estate residents and guests at all times
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with other gardeners to ensure smooth operations and task coverage
- Communicate effectively with the Team Leader regarding any issues or maintenance concerns
Inventory & Equipment Management:
- Assist in managing gardening supplies and ensure tools are well-maintained
- Report maintenance or repair needs promptly
Health & Safety Compliance:
- Follow all relevant health and safety regulations and best practices
- Read and implement risk assessments as directed by the Team Leader and Head Gardener
Estate Presentation:
- Ensure the estate remains welcoming and well-maintained in all weather conditions.
Candidates must be/have:
- Previous practical experience in gardening or landscaping
- Live within a commutable distance (45 mins max) of the estate
- Knowledge of plant care, including glasshouse production and containerised plants
- Relevant machinery certifications (compact tractors, small utility vehicles, PA1, PA6a) – is desirable
- Experience with horticultural power tools
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high standards
- Good communication skills and a professional demeanour
- Physical stamina and ability to perform manual labour
- Certification in horticulture or a related field is a plus
- A valid UK driving licence
- Discretion, reliability, and trustworthiness
- A proactive attitude, flexibility, and a willingness to assist other teams as needed
Hours
Full-time, with flexible working hours, including occasional weekends.
Location
Near Andover, on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border.
Salary and Benefits
£30,000 – £35,000, + discretionary bonus.
25 days of holiday, 5% pension contribution, subsidised medical insurance and support of an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).
