Overview

A busy family household in Chelsea, London, is looking for an experienced, organised and proactive Live out Family Cook / Household Assistant. The family of four includes two school aged boys, aged 9 and 11.

This is a varied and hands on role with cooking and food preparation at its heart, combined with practical household and family support. The family are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys preparing wholesome, nutritious and appealing family food and who is equally happy to help with the children, run an errand or assist around the house when required.

A strong cooking background is essential, although this is very much a family household role rather than a Private Chef position. The right person will be flexible, practical and comfortable working in a busy family home where everyone works together and helps where needed.

The successful candidate will work alongside an established Housekeeper and Personal Assistant. The family are looking for someone experienced, grounded and dependable who understands the demands of a busy family household and can become a trusted, long term member of the household team. Job duties

Responsibilities of the Family Cook / Household Assistant, include:

Cooking, Food and Nutrition

  • Take primary responsibility for the family’s day to day cooking and food preparation
  • Prepare wholesome, balanced and nutritious family meals using fresh, high quality ingredients
  • Plan and prepare breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks as required
  • Take ownership of meal planning and confidently suggest meals based on the family’s tastes, preferences and nutritional needs, while being equally happy to follow recipes provided by the Principals and prepare specific dishes as requested
  • Plan ahead and prepare or batch cook meals where appropriate to accommodate the family’s schedule
  • Take responsibility for food shopping, including shopping in person and managing online grocery orders
  • Source good quality seasonal produce from trusted suppliers and local shops
  • Manage household food stocks and ensure fresh ingredients and everyday essentials are kept well supplied
  • Monitor freshness and use by dates and help minimise food waste
  • Prepare relaxed family style meals suitable for both adults and children
  • Adapt meals according to individual preferences, dietary requirements and allergies
  • Prepare food for the children, household staff and Principals as required
  • Keep up to date with the family’s preferences and ensure there is always suitable food available
  • Involve the children in simple cooking or baking where appropriate
  • Keep the kitchen clean, tidy and organised to a consistently high standard, including cleaning up thoroughly after cooking
  • Ensure food is stored correctly and maintain excellent standards of kitchen and food hygiene

Household and Family Support

  • Provide practical support with the children as needed and be confident caring for two school aged boys
  • Undertake school pick ups and drive the children to activities or appointments when required
  • Provide occasional evening childcare, approximately four evenings per month, with flexibility to work later when required
  • Run occasional household errands when requested
  • Assist with practical household tasks as required and be comfortable stepping in wherever an extra pair of hands is needed
  • Walk the family dog when required
  • Work closely with the Housekeeper and Personal Assistant to ensure good communication and a smoothly run household

Candidates must be / have:

  • Around 10 years of experience working within private households, with a strong track record of longevity in previous positions
  • A strong family cooking background and a genuine interest in healthy, nutritious food
  • Experience working in a family home with school aged children and confidence caring for them independently when required
  • A grounded, dependable and consistent nature, with a positive and energetic approach
  • The ability to use their own initiative while also being receptive to guidance, feedback and clear expectations from the Principals
  • A proactive, practical and flexible approach, with the ability to adapt when plans or priorities change
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Must be a confident and experienced driver with a valid United Kingdom driving licence. A car will be provided for work use
  • Be dog friendly and comfortable helping with the family dog when required
  • Highly discreet and respectful of the privacy and confidentiality required when working within a private family home
  • A genuine willingness to help across the household and work collaboratively as part of an established household team
  • Fluent English

Hours

Monday to Friday, 11:00 – 20:00.

Hours are consistent during term time, with around four evenings a month of childcare, agreed in advance where possible.

Hours and leave may be adjusted around family travel. Occasional European travel is required, with accommodation provided.

Salary

£55,000 to £60,000 depending on experience, plus discretionary bonus.
